WELCOME. This is a research project being conducted by Dr. John Wixted at the University of California, San Diego. The purpose of this research project is to find out more about human memory. We are interested in studying these issues to increase our general understanding for human cognitive processes.
What will I be asked to do? You have been asked to participate because you are interested in learning about research first hand. The procedure involves studying lists of words, faces, pictures, or short video clips on a computer screen. You will then ask to remember what those pictures, words or details about the video were. Participation in this study will take up to 15 minutes.
What about confidentiality? This experiment is being hosted by University of California, San Diego servers. Research records will be kept confidential. Research records will be kept confidential to the extent allowed by the law. Research records may be reviewed by the UCSD Institutional Review Board.
What are the risks of this research? You may experience some frustration or boredom while participating in our study but you may withdraw from the experiment at any time. Another risk is the potential harm resulting from a breach of confidentiality; however, no identifiers will be stored with subject’s data.
What are the benefits of this research? This research is not designed to help you personally, but the results may help the investigator learn more about human memory. We hope that, in the future, other people might benefit from this study through improved understanding of human cognitive processes.
How many subjects will be tested? We test many thousands of subjects in these simple, on-going experiments. Over the years, we have tested almost 60,000 subjects using online platforms, and we have plans to test at least 30,000 more.
Do I have to be in this research? May I stop participating at any time? You will be one of thousands of participants. Your participation in this research is completely voluntary. You may choose not to take part at all. If you decide to participate in this research, you may stop participating at any time. If you decide not to participate in this study or if you stop participating at any time, you will not be penalized or lose any benefits to which you otherwise qualify.
What if I have questions? This research is being conducted by Dr. John Wixted at the University of California, San Diego. If you have any questions about the research study itself, please contact John Wixted. You may also call the UCSD Human Subjects protection program at 858-246-HRPP (858-246-4777) for more information about this, to inquire about your rights as a research subject.
By participating in this research you are indicating that you are at least 18 years old, have read this consent form, and agree to participate in this research study. Please keep this consent form for your records.
